Learning in Motion: The Training Prospects of Mobile Technologies

We are a society in motion, equipped to communicate, multitask and work, work, work while on the go. Today there are 1.5 billion mobile devices in use globally, which is three times the number of PCs operating today. One quarter of the world’s population is going about its daily business (work, school, errands, social events) accompanied by small yet powerful computers that we call mobile phones, PDAs and iPods.

The portability of these devices has also made more of our daily lives—from simple communication needs to sophisticated work assignments—portable. Mobile information sharing goes beyond the calls we receive on cell phones and e-mails that come to our PDAs. Today we can download podcasts (audio and video segments) to mobile devices, giving information the vitality of voice and image. This rapid proliferation of mobile tools and the advancement of their capabilities mean that a new era in business training and corporate learning is here. The mobile classroom has arrived.
