The workplace has never been so interesting or diverse. Four generations of employees work side-by-side in businesses, government institutions, schools and hospitals across the country. From the twenty-somethings to the seasoned seventies and beyond, the workforce has expanded across numerous decades to include a vast array of experience, personalities, values and learning methods.
The Generational Breakdown
Today’s workforce has four generations on the job, which for this article we will define as:
- The World War II Generation (born before 1940)
- The Baby Boom Generation (born 1940 to 1960)
- GenX (born 1960 to 1980)
- GenY (born 1980 to 2000)
The coexistence of four generations in the workforce is the result of demographic shifts and employers’ needs colliding.
